Overview School of Mathematics and Statistics

The School of Mathematics and Statistics of Huazhong University of Science and Technology was founded in 1953 along with the foundation of Huazhong Institute of Technology, the former name of the University.

Under the contribution by prominent mathematicians such as Lin Shaogong, Xu Lizhi, Chen Qingyi, Huang Zhiyuan, etc. the School has started to accept master students in applied mathematics in 1981, in computational mathematics in 1990 and in probability theory and statistics in 1993. In 1998, the school begins to accept PhD students in probability theory and mathematical statistics. The School was approved to establish postdoctoral research station in 2001. Mathematics was acknowledged as one among the First-level Disciplines Authorized to Grant Doctorate Degree in Mathematics in 2011, which includes pure mathematics, computational mathematics, applied mathematics, probability theory and statistics and Operational Research and Control theory.

The school is currently comprised of Pure Mathematics Department, Applied Mathematics Department, Information and Computational Science Department, Probability and Statistics Department, Computational Science Hubei Key Laboratory,

The School has established three undergraduate majors in mathematics and applied mathematics, information and computational science, and statistics. At current, it has 861 students, including 455 undergraduates, 290 master students, and 116 doctoral students.

At present, the School of Mathematics and Statistics has over 105 faculty members, including 31 professors and 27 PhD supervisors, 50 associate professors/ associate researchers, and 24 lecturers. Among the teachers, 16 of them have been awarded the“High School Young Teachers Award”, New Century Excellent Talent Support Program or “Cross-Century Excellent Talents Support Program”, 4 receives of Young and Middle-aged Experts with Outstanding Contributions in Hubei Province”, 1 National Distinguished Young Scholars of the NSFC, 3 Excellent Young Scholars of NSFC, 1 New Century Hundred Million Talent Project,  7 receives of the special government allowance, 4 Baosteel Excellent Teacher Award. The college attaches great importance to the training of talents. There are three national quality courses , 5 provincial quality courses “complex function”, “calculation method”, “calculus”, “probability theory and mathematical statistics”, “mathematical Analysis ". In recent years, the college has won 5 provincial and ministerial level teaching and research achievements awards, 2 national outstanding doctoral thesis nomination award. The college has strong research group including stochastic analysis, mathematical statistics, dynamic systems, fractal geometry, differential equation theory and its applications, financial mathematics, applied functional analysis, numerical solutions of differential equations, complex system modeling and simulation, wavelet analysis and image processing. In the past five years, the academic team of the School has received more than 40 million research funds, more than 58 national natural science funds, more than 800 papers published in SCI, and more than 30 monographs and textbooks. He has achieved outstanding results in the national college students' mathematics competition and digital model competition.

After several generations of efforts, the School of Mathematics and Statistics has made great progress in discipline construction, scientific research, and personnel training.
